Description

Feb. 11, 1958 F. BREMSHEY 2,822,815
UMBRELLA FRAME Filed Nov. 1,- 1955 V Ihveman F017: BREMSHE Y United States Patent UMBRELLA FRAME Fritz Bremshey, Solingen-Ohligs, Germany Application November 1, 1955, Serial No. 544,233 Claims priority, application Germany November 2, 1954 1 Claim. (Cl. 135-39) Umbrella frames have a main slider, the upper end of which has a projecting rim to which the cover stretchers are hinged, and the slider serves at the same time as a handle for manipulating, i. e. opening and closing, the umbrella. The main slider is provided with an axially extending slot through which the two locking springactuated locking members provided on the umbrella stick emerge, one of these members being located in the vicinity of the umbrella handle and the other just below the umbrella cover, so that they can hold the main slider in either of its end positions. These two locking mem bers are depressed to open or close the umbrella, by depressing either of them. The operation is clumsy, difiicult and even dangerous and frequently results in injury to the fingers.
In order to obviate all these disadvantages, according to the invention, the axially displaceable ring on the main slider is provided at its upper end with a widened portion which extends outwardly around the slider and prevents the fingers holding the ring from sliding off beyond the upper end of the ring. In this way, the fingers manipulating the umbrella are also prevented from coming into contact with the rim itself. In a particularly advantageous form of construction, the upper extension of the ring is widened outwardly in funnel-like form and the axial extent of the widened portion is so dimensioned that the inner curved part of the ring allows the upper locking members to pass through the slot in the slider when the extension bears against the rim of the slider.
The upper extension of the ring can be used at the same time for providing a better guidance for the ring 4 2,822,815 Patented Feb. 11, 1958 on the slider. This can be achieved by bending the top edge of the extension inwardly so as to provide an additional guide for the ring on the slider.
An embodiment of an umbrella frame according to the invention is illustrated, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. l is an elevation of the umbrella frame, and
Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on a larger scale.
Fig. 1 shows an umbrella frame comprising the umbrella stick 1, the umbrella handle 2, the cover ribs 3, and the main stretchers 6 hinged to the upper end of the main slider 4 having an upper rim 5. The lower locking member 7 and the upper locking member 8 extend laterally from the umbrella stick. On the main slider 4 is mounted a ring 10 which is displaceable over the shank of the slider between the bottom flange 9 and the rim 5 and serves for actuating the locking members 7 and 8.
In Fig. 2 the main slider 4 and the part of the umbrella stick 1 enclosed by it in the region of the upper locking member 8 are shown on a larger scale. The barrel-shaped ring 10 is provided with a top extension 11 which widens outwardly in funnel-like form, the top edge of which extension is bent over inwardly as shown at 12, to form an additional guide for the ring 10 on the shank of the main slider 4.
I claim:
In combination with an umbrella frame including an umbrella stick, a slider slidable on said stick, a locking member on said stick engageable in a slot in said slider, umbrella stretchers, a rim to which said umbrella stretchers are hinged, a barrel-shaped ring axially displaceable on said slider, said ring having a first cam surface above a second cam surface, said first cam surface being in the form of a frustum of a cone and the second cam surface being in the form of an inverted frustum of a cone, a funnel-shaped projection extending from the upper edge of the first cam surface, the upper edge portion of the funnel-shaped projection extending inwardly and downwardly to form a bearing on the slider.
