Abstract

194,479. Pedersen, G. Jan. 24, 1922. Pocket, folding, and telescopic umbrellas; joints; runners; sticks.-A folding umbrella has its main rib sections 21 pivoted to brace ribs 25 comprising two hinged sections, a tension spring 30 being secured to the sections to hold them in alignment. The spring 30 may be below the axis of the brace ribs 25. A truss rib 33 connects the hinge 27 of the brace rib to the main rib at 34. An upper brace rib 24 has its inner end secured to a collar 17 on a sleeve 8. The stick is formed of telescopic sections 1, 2, 3, 4, with a groove in each to prevent rotation and with catches 7 to hold them extended. A lower sleeve or runner 11 slides on the upper sleeve 8. In operation, to fold the umbrella, the sleeve 11 is slid up on the sleeve 8, thus breaking the joint 27. Further movement of the sleeve 11 brings it into engagement with the collar 17 on sleeve 8, breaking the joint 22 so that the ribs are folded, as shown in Fig. 2. The fabric is secured by a head plate 15 and a bead 14 on the stick.
