Abstract
224,170. Pugel, F. J. May 12, 1924. Folding umbrellas; joints; opening; ribs and stretchers; sticks; top notches.-A folding umbrella has a stick composed of telescopic sections 1 - - 4, Fig. 4, and ribs formed of inner and outer sections 17, 19 pivoted at 20, Figs. 4 and 6, to plates 21. Each pair of rib sections are also connected by a link 25 and each plate is connected by a stretcher 30 to a crown piece 7, which is secured to the stick section 1 by a button washer 9 and screw 11, and by a stretcher 31 to a grooved flange 37 on the stick section 2. In order to close the umbrella, the stick section 1 is pushed into the section 2 until a nut 50 in the lower end of the section 1 engages a threaded rod 51 connected to a cap 49, whereupon rotation of the cap completely telescopes the sections' 1, 2 causing the rib sections 17 and stretchers 30, 31 to fold against the stick and the plates 21 to turn about their pivots 20 associated, with the sections 17. The links 25 thereupon constrain the ribsections 19 to fold upwardly against the sections 17, Fig. 6 showing a transition stage. In order to open the umbrella, it is only necessary to rotate the cap until the rod 51 is disengaged from the nut 50, whereupon a spring 40 completes the outward movement of the stick section 1. The piece 7 is formed with radial arms provided with dependent bearings 16 and apertured recesses 34 to accommodate the pivot pins of the rib sections 17 and the stretchers 30. A sleeve 47 serving as a handle is secured between a ferrule 48 on the stick section 4 and the cap 49. The rib tips T, Fig. 3, are formed with a slotted sleeve 53 to engage a resilient latch 55 on the end of the rib sections 19.
