FOLDING UMBRELLA File May 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 Jesse TuthzLZZ INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented Apr. 7, 1931 UNITED STATES JESSE TUTHILL, OF CHILLICOTHE, ILLINOIS FOLDING UMBRELLA Application filed May 14,
My present invention has reference to an im rovement in folding umbrellas.
he primary object is the provision of a foldingumbrella having an improved construction of jointed ribs and spreaders con- 'nected with the joints of the outer rib sections, of such construction and arrangement as to permit of the parts being folded to reduce the size of the umbrella so that the same can be conveniently carried in the hand or in the traveling case of the user.
To the attainment of the foregoing the invention consists in the invention as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of a sufficient portion of an umbrella construction to illustrate my improvement, parts being broken away and parts in section.
2o F igure 2 is a similar View showing the parts moved to the first stage in the collapsing of the umbrella. I
Figure 3 is a detail elevation to illustrate the next step in the folding of the umbrella.
Figure 4 is a view showing the umbrella folded, and the handle portion of the stick removed. 7
Figure 5 is a detail elevation of the handle portion of the stick.
Figure 6 is an enlarged elevation looking toward the joint of the ribs of the umbrella.
Figure 7 is a top plan view of the ribspreader joint.
Figure 8 is a view substantially similar to Fi ure 6 but illustratin a modification.
i ure 9 is an elevation showing the ribs and die spreader therefor when the umbrella construction disclosed by Fig. 8 is closed.
The stick of the umbrella includes an upper section 1, and a lower section 2 that carries a handle 3. The stick section 2 has a reduced threaded extension which is screwed in the socket of the section 1.
Fixed on the outer end of the stick section 45. 1, inward of the ferrule thereon there is a top-notch 4 and to this top-notchthere is pivotally secured the ribs. In the showing of the drawings I have deemed it necessary to illustrate only one of such ribs. As disclosed by the drawings the rib comprises an 1928. Serial No. 277,496.
inner section 5 and an outer section 6. The inner section 5, at the outer end thereof, is preferably thickened to form the same with a lug extension 7 which, from its outer end is widened, as at 8, and provided on one of its faces with a laterally extending pin or lug 9. The outer rib section is provided with a similar lug 10, which in the preferred embodiment of the invention is formed with a centrally arranged depending ear 11 that is pivoted, as at 12, to the depending portion 8 of the In 7.
Pivote as at 13, to the inner end of the lug 10 there is the bifurcated end of a spreader rod 14. The spreader rod is pivotally secured to the usual runner 15 that is arranged for movement on the stick, which runner is notched in the usual manner to engage the upper depressible spring catches 16 in the stick member 1 and the lower depressible catch member 17 in the stick section 3.
When the runner is moved outwardly on the stick and is engaged by the upper catch 16 onthe stickthe spreader rod 14 will be moved to the position illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings and will cause the swinging of the rib sections 5 and 6 on their pivot 12 to cause the pin or stop 9 to be brought into con tact with the shoulder 18 on the lug 10. The rib sections are thus effectively held in longitudinal alinement. By moving the runner downwardly on the stick the outer rib section 6 may be swung toward and almost against the inner rib section 5. When the runner is again moved outwardly on the stick, it may be moved beyond the upper catch 16 on the stick section 1. Thereafter the handle carrying portion of the stick may be unscrewed from the section 1 and be inserted in the fabric of the folded umbrella.
In Figures 8 and 9 the outer rib section 19 is connected to the inner rib section 20 by a bail or like element 21 that passes throu h the sides of both of the rib sections. T e outer rib section 19 is formed with an extension 21 which is notched, as at 22, to receive the inner arm of the bail 21 therein when the rib sections are in spread condition. To the extension 21 there is pivotally secured, as at 23, the angle end 24 of the spreader member adjacent end of the outer rib section and,
25. The operation of this arrangement is similar to that previously described.
The simplicity and advantages of my construction will it is believed'be fully understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art when the foregoing description has been carefully read in connection with the .accome panying drawings, but obviously I do not wish to be restricted to the precise details herein set forth and, therefore, hold myself entitled to make such changes therefrom as fairly fall within the scope of what I claim.
Having described the invention, I claim 2- In a folding umbrella having a stalf, ribs having their inner ends pivoted onthe outer portion of said staff and comprising inner andouter sections, a relatively thick elongated member attached to the outer end of the inner rib section and formed to provide an off-set lug, a pin projecting laterally from said member and at a right angle to said h1g an elongated member secured to the formed to; provide a centrally located apertured. lug projecting from one edge of the I member and pivotally mounted upon the first mentioned member, and a spreader rod having'sliding and pivotal connection with said staff, and having an outer off-set bifurcated extremity pivotally. connected with the inner end of said membercarried by the outer rib section, whereby the rib sections and rods can be arranged substantially parallelwith said staff. or extended therefrom for use with the last mentioned member engaging said pin with said rib sections arranged in end to end relation. 7 i
In testimony whereof I aflix my sig gnature.v
' s i JESSE TUTHILL.
