To all whom it may concern Be it known that-I, zen of the United States, residing at Chat tanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

y invention relates to improvements in umbrellas of the folding type.

An important object of this invention is to provide novel means for folding an umbrella within a small space without tearing of the same.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for quickly and conveniently folding the umbrella to permit the same to be carried in valises or stored in other small places.

A further object is to provide an umbrella of the character described, which is cheap, few in parts and neat in appearance.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same,

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral generally designates an umbrella staff or main rod including a pair of sections 12 and 13. A handle 14 of any desired type is arranged on the section 13. As indicated the forward end of the section 13 is provided with a screw threaded extension 15 adapted to partake of threaded engagement with the interior of the section 12. to a rod 17 slidably arranged in the tubular section 12. A cylindrical member 18 slidably mounts the rod 17 and ahead 17 is formed on said rod 17 to prevent accidental detachment thereof from frame through the cylinder l8. lVhen the extension 15 has threaded engagement with the tubular section 12, l2 and 13 are rigidly connected. The staff proper is provided with an annulus 19 at its forward end portion. The annulus 19 has ivotal connection with a plurality of pivoted ribs 20. As indicated in Fig. 4 the outer end portions of the ribs 20 are provided with cylindrical sleeves 21, having openings 22 slidahly receiving ribs 23. The ribs 23 for the purpose of this discussion will be designated slidable ribs, while the ribs 20 will be designated main or pivoted ribs. The slidable ribs 23 are connected at their outer ends to a cover 24. The central portion of the cover 24 is secured to the annulus 19 as is usual. A sleeve 25 is rigidly secured to the inner end portion of each slidable rib 23 and is provided with an opening 26 slidably receiving the adjacent ribs 20. With reference to Fig. 2, it will be noted that the slidable ribs 23 may be slid under the ribs 20 when it is desired to fold the umbrella.

When it is desired to fold the umbrella, the runner 27 is drawn down as usual and the umbrella caused to assume the usual closed position. The slidable ribs 23 are now drawn upwardly alongside of the ribs 20 and the cloth covering arranged over the slidable ribs 23 caused to fold under the cloth arranged over the main or pivoted ribs.

lVhen it is desired to open the umbrella, the sections or ribs 23 are caused to assume an extended position with relation to the ribs 20 and the runner 27 subsequently forced upwardly, for opening the umbrella cover.

lVhile I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is understood that I may make such minor changes in arrangement and construction of parts as Will remain Within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, What' I claim is I 1. A. folding umbrella having a rib in relatively movable sections, a block fixed to each section and slidably mounting the complementary section, a cover secured to one of the sections and to the block thereon, a stretcher having a bifurcated portion, and the last mentioned block being disposed in said portion and braced thereby against axial movement, and means to pivot the last mentioned block to the stretcher.

2. A folding umbrella having a rib in relatively movable sections, a

block fixed to each section and slidably mounting the complementary section, a cover secured to one of the sections and to the block thereon, a stretcher having a bifurcated portion, and the last mentioned block being disposed in said portion and braced thereby against axial movement, and means to pivot the last mentioned block to the stretcher, the said section being disposed in vertical alinement and the pivot means engaging such block intermediate the transverse planes of the sections. i
