Folding umbrellas; ribs; sticks; holding open. -In a folding umbrella, the ribs are composed of inner and outer sections 6, 7 connected by n link 8, the outer section 7 being extended to form a honsing 9 for the link 8 and its conrexion with the section 6. There are two sets of stretchers with separate runners. The stick 1, Fig. 1, is solid below a, but is continued upwards within the sheath 3 and has a knucklejoint 2. On the stick 1 are the elongated catch 17 and pin 5. The stick is held rigid when the umbrella is open, by pressure of the runner 12 on the catch 17, which, being carried by the stick 1, holds the pin 5 in an offset portion at the top of a slot 4. The umbrella may be closed in the ordinary way, when, owing to its elongation, the catch 17 is held depressed by the runner 12 until the runner 15 passes on to it. The ribs may next be folded by pushing up the runner 12 as far as the runner 15. To fold the stick, it is rotated, bringing the point 5 in line with the main part of the slot 4, so that the upper part of the stick may be withdrawn from the sheath 3. In opening the umbrella as shown in Fig. 1, the ribs break at the joints until the runner 12 engages the runner 15 and moves it upwards.
