Folding umbrellas; runners; open-caps.- An umbrella which can be folded up for storage in a suit case &c. comprises inner and outer rib sections hinged together at 13 and to two sets of braces 15, 19 and to a notch 11. This notch 11 and the runners 8, 16 to which the braces are attached can all slide upon the stick 1, and the centre of the cover, free of the ribs. is secured to the stick between a pair of similar sleeves 3. The rib sections are hinged together by means of lateral extensions, which enable the sections to be folded parallel to one another with the braces 15 between them. The runner 16 moves on a sleeve 10 attached to the runner 8; this sleeve is slotted to accommodate two lugs 6, 7 on the stick, winch act as stops for the runner 16 and notch 11 and prevent emllong play of the stick when the umbrella is collapsed. One stop only may be used. In opening the umbrella, upward movement of the runner S causes the sleeve 10 to force up the notch 11; but this sleeve is preferably not long enough to move the notch against the cover sleeves 3, the elasticity of the ribs being sufficient to complete the movement of the notch. The umbrella can be closed without collapsing the ribs. The stick is provided with spring catches for engaging the runner 8 in its upper and lower positions, and is made in two separable sections secured together by a spring catch.
