In a pocket umbrella having telescopic stem sections 1 and 2 and ribs comprising two foldable sections 4 and 7, a pulling means such as a cord 8 is provided for pulling the rib sections into alignment when the umbrella is opened by moving the slide 6 towards the umbrella crown 3. A stretcher 5 is connected between the slide 6 and the rib section 4. In the arrangement shown, the cord 8 is in the form of a loop which passes through holes at the ends of rib sections 4 and 7 and is attached to a sleeve 11 which slides on the stretcher 5 to an extent limited by a small pin 14 or by a clip secured to the stretcher. The loop is secured to the sleeve 11 by drawing the ends through several holes in lugs formed on the sleeve. Alternatively, the loop may be drawn through a single hole in lugs on the sleeve 11 and the ends secured by a sheet metal clamp. As a further alternative, the loop, instead of being passed through the hole at the inner end of rib section 7, may be passed through the hole at the outer end 19 of the rib section. In a simplified arrangement a plastic cord is secured directly to the stretcher 5 and after passing through the hole at the end of rib section 4 is looped around the inner end of rib section 7.
