Abstract

753,177. Telescopic umbrellas. HAUPT, H. June 22, 1954 [June 25, 1953], No. 18325/54. Class 134. A telescopic umbrella comprises a stick having three telescopic parts 1, 2 and 3. Part 1 carries the crown 4 and a spring catch 5 which engages an auxiliary slide 6 when the umbrella is open. Part 3 carries the handle 7 and a spring catch 8 which engages the auxiliary slide 6 when the umbrella is closed. Each rib consists of three telescopic parts 10, 11 and 12, the inner end of the outer part 12 being connected to a guide stirrup 14 which is sufficiently large to slide over the inner rib part 10 and is provided with an eye 15 to which the umbrella cover 16 is attached. A main stretcher, comprising an outer part 18 connected by means of a pivot 19 to an inner part 20, is connected between a pivot 13 on the guide stirrup 14 and a pivot 21 on a main slide 22. An inner auxiliary stretcher 24 carried by the auxiliary slide 6 is connected by means of a pivot 23 to the inner part 20 of the main stretcher and has a preferably fork-like portion 9 extending beyond the pivot 23. An outer auxiliary stretcher 26 is connected between a pivot 25 on the portion 9 of the inner auxiliary stretcher 24 and a pivot 29 on the outer part 18 of the main stretcher. The stretcher system forms a lazy tongs framework and the pivot 29 is arranged so close to the pivot 19 that upon alteration in the distance between the main and auxiliary slides 22 and 6 the angular movement of the inner and outer main stretcher parts 20 and 18 relative to one another is greater than the angular movement of the inner main stretcher part 20 relative to the inner auxiliary stretcher 24. The maximum angular movement of the parts 20 and 18 relative to one another is approximately 180 degrees and is limited by the provision on the part 18 of an extension 30 which abuts against the part 20. When the umbrella is open the main slide 22 abuts against the crown 4 and the stretcher 18, 20 forms an approximate chord of the bent rib. In the closed position (indicated in dotted lines) the outer stretcher part 18 is swung in the direction of the umbrella stick and the ribs are then telescoped by telescoping the stick parts and moving the stretcher system towards the umbrella crown 4.
