A folding umbrella frame comprises ribs each having an upper part 3 hinged to the crown and a lower part 8 having a flattened part 7 hinged in the forked end 6 of the upper part by a pivot pin 9. A portion 10 of the lower rib part 8, extending beyond the hinge, lies within a fluted portion of the upper part 3 when the two rib parts are brought into line and terminates in a slotted portion 11 at an angle to the length of the rib. The stretcher 13 is hinged at its inner end to the umbrella slide and at its outer end has forked members 12 carrying a pivot pin 14 on which is mounted a roller 15 which rides in the slot in the lower rib portion 11. The cover 20 is stitched to the upper rib part 3 at 22, and the rib parts 3 and 8 are offset adjacent to the hinge to avoid nipping the cover when the parts are folded, the stretcher being offset at 19 so that in the folded position the rib parts and the stretcher can lie substantially parallel to one another and close to the umbrella stick. The slotted portion 11 may be formed integrally with the rib part 8 by bending the rib into a loop completed by welding, or a separate slotted member may be secured to the portion 10 by welding or screwing. In a modified construction the slotted portion is forked and the stretcher terminates in a flattened portion carrying a pivot pin on which are mounted two rollers which ride in the slots in the arms of the fork. In a further modification the roller is mounted at the end of the extended part of the lower rib part and the slotted member is formed at the end of the stretcher. The umbrella stick (not shown) comprises two separable sections, the lower section carrying a screwed extension which engages the threads of a nut held in a recess in the upper section, or alternatively a telescopic stick may be used.
