1358736 Umbrellas and parasols E F FOGARTY and G MEEHAN 19 Aug 1971 [20 Aug 1970J 38894/71 Heading A4P An umbrella, or a parasol, has a cover 4 with a central aperture 5 normally covered, when the umbrella is open, by an auxiliary cover part 9 secured to ribs 10, pivoted to a stick 1 and pivoted to tie members 13 pivoted to a runner 12, the ties 13 being under resilient tension when the umbrella is open so as to press the cover part 9 downwards to normally close the aperture 5, and the cover part 9 rising against said tension to uncover the aperture when excessive windpressure is exerted on the underside of the cover, The resilient tension may be provided by a spring 14 acting between runner 12 and a notched disc 2 to which main ribs 3 are pivoted. A loose collar 15 of sponge rubber may be located between runner 12 and a runner 7 pivotally mounting struts 6 pivoted to ribs 3, runners 7 and 12 being connected by pivoted links 16. In a second embodiment, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the main ribs (3a, b) and the stick (1a, b) are telescopic, the main ribs and the ribs (10') supporting the auxiliary cover part (9') being pivoted to a common notch (2') and ribs (10') being connected to a runner (12') by resilientlyextendible tie-members(13'). The runne (12') pivotally mounts struts (16') pivoted to struts (6') which are pivoted to a runner (7') and to the main ribs (3a, b).
