Abstract

1,252,343. Umbrellas. OKUDA K. K, and S. KITANI. Feb. 6, 1969 [Feb. 11, 1968], No.6462/69. Heading A4P. An umbrella adapted to be opened or closed with one hand comprises a top hub 2 secured to the top of a stick 1 and adapted to support pivotally a plurality of ribs 6, a second hub 3 secured to the stick at a point spaced from the top hub, a plurality of foldable stays 7 pivotally connected between the ribs 6 and the second hub 3, each of said stays including pivotally inter-connected inner and outer sections 7<SP>1</SP> , 7<SP>11</SP> respectively, an intermediate hub 4 slidably mounted on the stick between the top and second hubs, and tension springs 10 inter-connecting the hub 4 and the outer stay sections 7<SP>11</SP>. An operating lever 11 within the stick is actuated by a manipulating lever 19, the lever 11 being either connected to the hub 4 and/or to an auxiliary hub 5 located below the hub 3. Auxiliary stays 8 inter-connect the hub 5 and the stays 7. A compression spring 17 is located between the hubs 3 and 4. Push up and push down rings 15<SP>1</SP>, 15 respectively may be provided, said rings being connected to the lever 11 by pins 14<SP>1</SP>, 14 respectively. Springs 10, 17 are designed so that in the opened condition the push up force applied to hub 4 by spring 17 is greater than the pull down force applied to the hub 4 by the springs 10 and under the closed condition the springs 10 pull down the hub 4 and compress the spring 17 thus obviating the need to provide further locking members.
