June 27, 1961 H. G. VOGEL UMBRELLA STICK Filed Dec. 1, 1958 United States Patent Ofiice 2,989,963. Patented June 27, 1951 2,989,968 UlVlBRELLA STICK Heinz Giinter Vogel, Solingen-Ohligs, Germany, as-

Solingen-Weyer, Germany Filed Dec. 1, 1958, Ser. No. 777,271 Claims priority, application Germany Dec. 6, 1957 1 Claim. 01. 13546) The present invention relates to an umbrella stick and, more particularly, to an umbrella stick for foldable umbrellas provided with spring-urged locking members adapted to hold the stick members to be telescoped into each other in their end positions.
Heretofore known umbrella sticks for foldable umbrellas have the drawback that it is rather difiicult to repair the above mentioned locking members inasmuch as in most instances the top and the handle of the umbrella had to be removed in order to be able to pass the inner stick member through the outer wider stick member.
It is, therefore, an object of the present invention to provide an umbrella stick for foldable umbrellas, which will overcome the above mentioned drawbacks.
it is another object of this invention to provide an umbrella stick for foldable umbrellas, which comprises two stick members adapted to be telescoped into each other and so arranged with regard to each other that the stick members can easily be pulled apart for purposes of repair without having to remove the top and/ or the handle of the umbrella stick.
These and other objects and advantages of the invention will appear more clearly from the following specification in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section through the connecting portion of the umbrella sticks when the umbrella is in its pulled-out condition.
FIG. 2 is a cross section through FIG. 1 taken along the line IIlI of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is an axial longitudinal section along the line IIl-III of FIG. 1.
The umbrella stick according to the present invention is characterized primarily in that in addition to the plug carrying the locking members, as for instance detent balls, there is provided a leaf spring with an abutment pin adapted in the pulled-out condition of the umbrella stick to abut a depression or the like in the outer stick member. At this abutment point of the abutment pin with the depression in the outer stick member, the outer stick member is provided with a bore through which the abutment pin can be pressed inwardly so that the two stick members can easily be completely disassembled.
According to a particularly advantageous arrangement of the present invention, the leaf spring may be connected for instance to a V-shaped reinforcing member which is connected to the end of the inner stick member, for instance by a depression or the like.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the umbrella stick shown therein comprises an outer stick member 1 and an inner stick member 2. The outer stick member 1 is in a manner known per se provided with a depression 3 which extends into a groove 4 of the inner stick member 2 so as to prevent the two stick members from turning relative to each other. Near the lower end of the inner stick member 2 there is arranged a plug 5 which may consist for instance of synthetic material and has a bore 6 therethrough. Mounted in this bore is a spring 7 acting upon two balls 8 and 9. The inner stick member 2 as Well as the outer stick member 1 are provided with bores adapted to allow the balls 8 and 9 to enter the same. When the two stick members are pulled apart, the balls will occupy the positions shown in FIGS. 1 and 3 and will .thus hold the stick members in their pulled-out positions. In order to allow an easy disassembly of the two stick members, the lower end of the inner stick member 2 has connected thereto a V-shaped reinforcing member 10. For purposes of maintaining the said reinforcing member 10 in its position, it may be provided with a bore 11 (FIG. 2) engaged by a depression 12 of the inner stick member 2. The said reinforcing member 10 has connected thereto a leaf spring 13 for instance by means of a punched-out rivet bushing 14. The upper end of said leaf spring carries an abutment pin 15.
From the above, it will :be evident that when the two stick members are pulled away from each other, the said abutment pin 15 will place itself against the end face of the depression 3, thereby preventing a further movement of the inner stick member out of the outer stick member. If, however, it is desired, for instance for purposes of repair, to disassemble the two stick members, i.e. to pull the inner stick member completely out of the outer stick member, it is merely necessary to press the abutment pin 15 inwardly. This is rather simple inasmuch as in this position of the abutment pin 15 the outer stick member 1 is provided with a bore 16. In this way, the two stick members can be taken apart without removing any other parts of the umbrella.
It is, of course, to be understood that the present invention is, by no means, limited to the particular construction shown in the drawing, but also comprises any modifications within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is:
In combination in an umbrella stick: an outer stick member, an inner stick member telescopically displaceable in said outer stick member, said inner stick member being movable inwardly relative to said outer stick member from an extended position to a contracted position in which the major portion of the inner stick member is telescoped within the outer stick member, said inner and outer stick members having cooperating detent means engageable to resist relative movement of said members when in said extended position, said outer stick member having a depression extending in longitudinal direction of said outer stick member over a certain section thereof and forming an internal projection, said inner stick memher having a longitudinal groove for movably receiving said projection and in cooperation therewith preventing relative rotation between said inner and outer stick members in said extended position of said umbrella stick, said outer stick member also being provided with a transverse bore therethrough adjacent that end of said depression which is closest to the lower end portion of said inner stick member when said umbrella stick is in its upright position, a holding member arranged within and connected to said lower end portion of said inner stick member, and a leaf spring having one end portion thereof connected to said holding member and having its other end portion provided with a single abutment member for engagement with said lower end of said depression in said extended position of said umbrella stick to thereby normally prevent extension of said stick beyond said extended position, said abutment member extending through said bore in said extended position and being movable out of engagement with said lower end of said depression while said stick is in its extended position to allow said inner stick member to be fully removed from said outer stick member.
