A collapsible umbrella adapted to have a generally rectangular cross section in plan when closed and having a stick 1, Fig. 1 telescoping in at least two places and ribs 5 which are in at least two parts and telescope and/or fold, comprises a notch 2 and a runner 3 which are both elongated in plan, stretchers 6 and the ribs 5 being linked to the runner 3 and notch 2 respectively by pins such as 9a, 9b Fig. 3. The transverse pins 9a secure the pins 9b in longitudinally arranged boxes. Fig.3 depicts two parts 9b arranged to join four ribs to the long sides of the notch and two transverse pins 9a securing two ribs to each short side of the notch. A similar arrangement may be used to secure both the stretches 6 to the runner 3 and also auxiliary stretchers 7 to an auxiliary runner 4. One or both of the pins 9b may be replaced by short pins (9c), Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown) or by pins (9d) Figs. 6-8 (not shown) on the axis L of the notch &c. 2, at least one pin (9d) being adapted to secure the stick to the notch. In a further modification the pins 9b are replaced by a single pin (9e) Fig. 9 (not shown) on the axis L and in yet other modifications pins parallel to the axis L engage a bush (3a), Figs. 10 and 11 (not shown) tangentially and secure it to the runners or engage recesses (1b) Fig. 12 (not shown) to prevent rotation of the runner.
