To all whom "it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT DE F. HAM- METT, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Bu chanan, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exactdescription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The invention relates to umbrellas and more particularly to the class of foldable umbrellas.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of an umbrella in which its stall and rib sections may be conveniently and quickly folded into compact form so that the umbrella when in folded position can be placed within a satchel or other traveling bag.

Another object of the invention is the provision of an umbrella in which the rib sections are connected in a novel manner to a sleeve forming a connection with the staii' of the umbrella so that anyone of the rib sections may be detached for replacement or repair without disturbing the other rib sections.

A further object of the invention is the of a folding umbrella in which the frame structure is generally improved and that is capable of being readily and quickly folded into compact form for the easy handling thereof.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of an umbrella which is simple in construction, thoroughly reliable and efficient in operation, and inexpensive in the manufacture.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, disclosing the preferred form of embodiment of the invention, and pointed out in the claim hereunto appended.

In the drawings :--Figure 1 is a sectional view through an umbrella constructed in accordance with the invention, the umbrella being in an open position. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of the collar connecting the rib sections. Fig. 3 is a sectional view thereof.

Similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawings.

In the drawings the numeral 10 designates generally a staff comprising sections 11 and 12 the latter being adapted to telescope within the said section 11 when it is desired to shorten the length of the umbrella. The section 11 in cross section is preferably of squared formation and has mounted thereon a slidable notch member 13, the latter held fixed to the outer end of the section 11 by a catch member 14; and this notch member is formed with a plurality of ears or lugs 15 the same projecting radially therefrom and each formed with opposite flat faces one of which terminates in a bevel portion 16, and through the beveled portions of these lugs are passed detachable pins 17 the same forming pivots for the inner ends of rib sections each comprising inner and outer sections 18 and 19, the mutually adjacent ends being pivoted as at 20 to links 21, which permit the folding of the rib sections as Wlll be hereinafter more fully described.

Mounted within the upper end of the section 12 of the stafi is a displaceable spring catch member the same being formed of a single wire 22, which is bent to provide spaced catch projections 23, the latter normally protruding through suitable 21])(1'l1ll10S in both the sections 11 and 12, which apertures normally register with each other when the stafi is distended so as to lock the sections thereof from telescoping one within the other.

Held fixed on the section 11 of the staff by the catch member is a runner 24:, the latter being provided with radial lugs, which are identical with the lugs 16, formed on the notch member 13, and carry the detachable pins 17 forming pivots for the inner ends of hollow brace rods 26, the latter having their outer ends pivotedto the links 21 of the rib sections.

Slidably mounted on the brace rods 26, are sleeves 27, the latter having pivoted thereto auxiliary brace rods 28, the same being also pivoted to the outer sections 19 of the ribs. Pivoted to each of the sleeves 27,

is a locking dog 30, the same being adapted to engage a notch 31 in the brace rod 26, to hold the outer section-19, of the rib folded inwardly when it is desired to reduce the normal size of the umbrella. Fitted in the outer ends of the sections 19 of the ribs are perforated tip members 32, and to these tips 32 is connected an umbrella cover (not shown) which is of the usual type.
