Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 1s, ieee,
Application tiled September 6, 1906. Serial No 333,459.
To @ZZ` whom# may concern,.-
Beit known that I, FORTUNATO A. PELUsI, a subject of the-King of Italy, residing at' New Brighton, in the county of Beaver and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new Vand useful Improvements in Folding Umbrellas, of, which the following is a specifii cation, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to folding umi brellas, and its lobject is to provide anum-I brella which may be folded into small compass and carried in a trunk or Satchel and readily unfolded for use.
The invention comprises an umbrella consisting of an umbrella handle-rod made up of sections detachably connected by novel means in combination with sectional folding i The invention also comprises improved means for connecting the rib-sections and for supporting and stiifening them in their unfolded or distended position.
The construction of the improvement will be more fully described hereinafterv in lconnection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and its novel features will be defined'in the appended claims. g
In the drawings, Figure lis a fragmentary side yelevation of an umbrella-frame constructed in accordance with the invention, in its unfolded position. Fig. 2 is 4a similar view with the ribs folded.4 Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view ofone of theV sectional ribs. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of one 4end of one of the upper rib-sections. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the upper end of the central section of one of the mainfribs. Fig. 6 is a detail elevation showing the means for connecting the lower end of the central section of each of the main ribs to the lower section of said rib. Fig. 7-is an elevation of the rib-sections shown in Fig. 6in their folded position and connected to onev of the twopart rods. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective of the clasp connecting the lower two sections of the main ribs. Fig. 9 is a side elevation showing the means for connecting the sections of the stay-ribs, and Fig. 10 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the means for connecting the handle-rod sections together.
The handle-rod of the umbrella is formed of a number of connected tubular sections,
four sections being shown in the.` drawings,
(designated, respectively, by the numerals 1, 2, 3, and 4,) the lower section 1 having the handle 5 attached thereto.
Within the upper end of the section 1 is an internally-threaded sleeve 6, secured in place within the tubular section by pins 7, and within this sleeve 6 is a rod 8, formed at its lower end with a collar 9, adapted to abut against the lower end of the sleeve to limit ythe upward movement of the rod. The upper end of the rod 8 is slotted to receive one end of a link 10, pivotally secured therein by apin 11. The upper, end of the link 10 is held within a slot 12 in the lower end of a plug 13 by a cross-pin 14;
The plug 13 is secured within the lower end of the tubular section 2 by pins or screws 15, and the lower slotted end 1.6 of said plug is circumferentially reduced and threaded to adapt it .,to. be screwed into the sleeve 6 to connect the sections 1 and 2. The sections 2 and 3 and the sections 3 and4 are connected in the same manner, thus enabling said section when unscrewed and separated, as illus trated in Fig. 10, to be turned and folded through the link connections 10.
.I/Vhen the tubular handle-rod sections are all screwed together,.they form a continuous rigidv rod., upon which slides the stay-rib sleeve 17 and to which is. secured the radially-slotted annuluslS, to which the upper ends of the main ribs are pivotally secured in the usual manner.
All of the main ribs and stay-ribs are of the same' construction, and hence a detailed description of one of each of these two series of ribs will suflice vfor all. Each main rib coni sists of three sections 19, 20, and 21. The upper section 19 is U-haped in cross-section -and pivotally secured to the annulus 1S, and
its lower end portion is formed with three pairs of parallel .perforated lugs 22, 23, and 24. A sqxuare pin is secured in the perforations of the lugs 22, while the other two pairs of lugs support round cross-pins 26 and 27.
To the pin 25 is secured one end of aflat spring 28, the opposite end of which is bent to form a hook 29, formed with an opening 30, and adjacent to said hook the spring is formed with a slot 31.
The upper end of the rib-section 2O extends under the pins 26, 25, and 27, being thus slidably connected to the upper section 19, and
IOC
IIO
the upper end of the rib-section 2O is formed with a beveled lug 32, having a tooth 33, adapted to engage in the opening 30 in the hook 29.
The lower end of the section 20 is pivotally connected to a clasp 34, comprising a U- shaped metal plate formed at each end with a pair of perforated ears 35 and 36. The lower end of the section 20is pivotally secured by a pin 37 between the ears 35 of the clasp, while the upper end of the lowersec tion 21 of 'the rib is pivot ally secured between the ears 36 of said clasp 34 by a pin 38.
The u per end ofthe rib-section 21 is perforated lor the attachment thereto of a chain 39, said chain being connected to the lower end of a two-part rod consisting of telescopic sections 40 and 41, each having a loop 42 to receive the adjacent section. The upper end of the rod-section 41 is formed with a hook to engage in the opening 30, formed in the hook 29 of the spring 28.
The sleeve 17 is connected to each of the main ribs of the umbrella by a folding stayrib, each consisting of two sections 43 and 44. The lower section 43 is pivotally secured to the sleeve 17 at one end, and its opposite end 45 is hooked and pivotally attached to a clasp 46, to which is also pivotally secured the lower end of the section 44, the upper end of said section 44 being pivotally secured to a clip 47, fixed upon the section 20 of the main rib. The meeting ends of Ithe stay- rib sections 43 and 44 are formed with flat confronting faces whichpermit said sections to fold upward, but not downward, thus insuring the rigidity of the sections when in their unfolded position, but allowing them to fold together, as shown in Fig. 2.
The cover of the umbrella (not shown) is sewed to the tips of the lower main-rib sections 21 and to the clasps 34, the latter being provided with thread-holes 48 for that pur pose.
The device constructed as thus described is adapted to be folded in the following manner: The sections 21 are first turned up upon the sections 20, as illustrated in Fig. 2, after which the stay-rib sections are turned upward to the position shown in Fig. 2. The sections 20 and 21. are then pushed upward, causing the rod- sections 40 and 41 to disengage the tooth 33 from the slot of the spring 28, the chain connections 39 permitting this movement. After all of the rib-sections are thus folded down upon the handle-rod section 3 the other sections of the handle-rod are disconnected and turned upon the links 10,
permitting the sections 1, 2, and 4 to be folded upon the section 3.
The unfolding of the umbrella-frame is accomplished by reversing the movements described, and it will be apparent that when the sections are in their folded position the entire umbrella will occupy but little space and may be readily carried in a satchel o r trunk.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
