Abstract

490,169. Umbrellas. ONO, S. Aug. 31, 1937, No. 23804. [Class 134] An umbrella comprises folding ribs 3 and stretchers 11, Fig. 2, which contain cores, each of which consists of rigid and flexible parts, the stretchers being connected to extensions of the rib cores, and flexible parts at the lower end of the stretchers being housed in grooves in the runner 16 and secured to a member 19 which is slidable on the runner. Each rib has three parts connected by hinges 4, 4<1> and a core comprising chains 7, 7<1> and bars 5, 5<1>, 5<11>. Each stretcher has a core comprising chains 14, 14<1> and bars 13, 13<1> and is pivoted to an extension 9 slidable in grooves in the ribs. The chains are formed by members 6, Fig. 4, hinged together. Holes 21 are provided for the attachment of a cover. Movement of the member 19 causes folding or unfolding of the stretchers and the operation of the runner causes folding or unfolding of the ribs.
