Abstract

473,767. Umbrellas. EELES, G. F. May 4, 1936, No. 12559. [Class 134] An umbrella comprises a hinged stick, hinged ribs, and flexible means connecting, at the underside of the umbrella, the ribs to the stick. The hinged ribs 14, Fig. 1, are connected to the stick by cords 23, each of which is fastened at its ends to the ends of adjacent ribs, passes through eyes on the ribs and is hooked to the stick at 26. Further cords 29 are similarly arranged to secure the ribs to a flange 31 on the stick. Two radial edges of the cover are adapted to be secured together by a sliding clasp fastener. Each rib consists of semicylindrical wood sections 17, Fig. 8, reinforced at the ends by metal bands 18 and provided with bevelled ends so that the extended rib has an arcuate shape. The sections 17 are hingedly connected together by fabric 20 to which the cover, and preferably the radial seams of the cover, may be stuck or sewed. Each stick section 2, Fig. 5, comprises semicylindrical wood or metal hinged parts 3, 4, the ends of which are fitted with bands 5 and interengaging slots and projections 6, 7. The sections may be lined with fabric which forms the hinges between the sections 2 and may be sewn at 9 to form the hinges between the parts 3, 4. A single piece of fabric may be used to line all the sections. When in use, the sections 3, 4 are secured together by press studs 11, 12. In another form, the metal sections are hinged together at 40, Fig. 10 and the halves of each section are hinged at 39. Hooked-shaped projections 33, fitted on members which slide in recesses in the portions 3 of the sections are adapted to engage cross-bars 34 in grooves 37 in the other portions 4 when the portions 3, 4 are relatively rotated to form the stick. The slidable members may be fitted on and operated by a cord 38 to release or to secure together the sections 3, 4. The cord may be fitted at each end of the stick with a tassel or button. A folding rubber handle may be provided on the stick.
