Abstract
Active carbon is produced by chlorinating a carbide or carbonitride of a metal or metalloid at 800-1, 800 DEG C., volatilizing the resulting chloride, and dechlorinating the resulting carbon. The substance chlorinated may be silicon, boron, titanium, zirconium, or aluminium carbide; or titanium or zirconium carbonitride. Chlorination may be in the static or fluidized bed. Residual chlorine may be removed by a cyclic fluctuation in temperature or pressure. Dechlorination of the carbon may be effected by subjecting to a vacuum; heating to 200-300 DEG C.; treating with a stream of steam, dry air, nitrogen, carbon dioxide or argon; or washing with water or an aqueous solution of alkali hydroxide, carbonate, or bicarbonate, ammonia, alkali bisulphite, hyposulphite, or thiosulphate, hydrogen peroxide, or hydrogen chloride.
