Abstract

a ,a 1-Dichlorotrimethylene carbonate is obtained by chlorinating trimethylene carbonate in the presence of chlorination catalyst. As chlorination catalyst there may be used a substance which produces free radicals in the reaction mixture, e.g. benzoylperoxide. Alternatively, the reaction may be effected whilst irradiating the reaction mixture with ultraviolet light. The reaction may be effected with free chlorine or sulphuryl chloride in the presence of an inert organic liquid, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, under conditions of reflux. a ,a 1-Dichlorotrimethylene carbonate is hydrolysed under acid conditions to malondialdehyde, reacts with guanidine hydrochloride to form 2-aminopyrimidine and with an excess of alcohol, e.g. n-butanol, to form a malondialdehyde tetra-acetal. Examples describe the preparation and subsequent treatment of a ,a 1-dichlorotrimethylene carbonate as set out above.
