Abstract
Benzene hexachloride is prepared by the reaction of benzene and chlorine under the action of actinic radiation in the presence of an ammonium salt. Suitable ammonium salts are ammonium chloride, sulphate, phosphate and nitrate. It is preferable to carry out the reaction with moist benzene, e.g. benzene containing 5 per cent of water. The ammonium salt may be added to the benzene in the form of an aqueous solution. The preferred ammonium salt is ammonium chloride and it may be added to the benzene, preferably in a concentration of 0.1 to 2 per cent by weight. Alternatively ammonia in benzene may be used, in which case the ammonium chloride is formed during the chlorination. One detailed example is given. The process gives rise to increased yields of the gamma isomer of benzene hexachloride.
