Abstract

Oxalic acid is prepared by passing gaseous propylene into an aqueous medium containing nitric acid maintained at a concentration of a least 50% by weight during the introduction of the propylene and at a temperature of 40 DEG to 80 DEG C. The concentration may be maintained preferably at between 60 and 70% by weight by introduction of fresh nitric acid throughout the duration of the reaction and an example describes a suitable apparatus. Oxalic acid of 100% purity is obtained.
