A straight bar rib knitting machine having means for preventing needles in each bed from forming stitches so that fabric with rib patterns other than the normal 1 Î 1 rib may be produced. As shown, Fig. 8, pivoted on a horizontal shaft 58 are L-shaped arms 57 carrying narrowing machines 28 and 27 for fashioning on the machine and frame needles respectively. Arms 57 supporting machine 28 are pivoted to a shaft 52 which can be moved up and down by rod 53. Narrowing machine 27 is pivoted on a horizontal shaft 50 and is rocked through levers, by a follower 33 engaging a cam 32. Presser points 4 which act on certain frame needles are mounted on a bar 6 suspended from a shaft 51 so that the points, which are operated by follower 33 engaging cam 31, may be moved into a rest position protected by girder 29. Some of the machine needles 2 are fixed in needle bar 10 while other machine needles 3 slide in tricks in needle bar 10 and can be moved by an auxiliary needle bar 11. Needle bar 11 can be moved by bolts 12 connected by links 13 with bell cranks 15 actuated by rings 18 secured to rod 17 which can be shogged in direction A until it strikes an abutment when needles 3 are in line with needles 2. In a modification, needles 3 are fixed and additional presser points are provided on bar 6. Which then performs two movements to press the selected needles 1 and the needles 3. In a further modification the selected frame needles may be made retractible instead of or as well as the machine needles 3.
