Abstract
954,905. Overload safety devices for cranes. CLYDE CRANE & BOOTH Ltd. Sept. 6, 1960 [Sept. 7, 1959], No. 30447/59. Heading B8B. An overload prevention device comprises a cylinder 2 attached to a crane structure 3 and a piston 5 to which is connected the load, a predetermined fluid pressure, controlled by a device 12, being maintained below the piston by a compressor 8 and a reservoir 7. In operation the air pressure in the cylinder 2 and the reservoir 7, the volume of which may be variable, is raised until it equals the maximum permissible load of the crane, the compressor motor 9 being switched off by the pressure sensitive device 12 when this pressure is reached. When an overload occurs the piston 5 is drawn downwards from the top of the cylinder 3 and only moves back when the overload is removed. In a second embodiment liquid occupies the space in the cylinder and part of the reservoir, compressed air occupying the rest of the reservoir.
