Abstract
1,126,727. Safety devices for jib-cranes. GROVE MFG. CO. 12 July, 1967 [21 July, 1966], No. 32175/67. Heading B8B. A safe load control device for a telescopic boom, comprised of a base-section 1, a midsection 2 and a fly-section 3, pivoted at 6 to a pair of supports 7 comprises an hydraulic pressure switch 19 with a fluid pressure input from fluid motors 10, 11 for luffing the boom and a mechanical input through a linkage 40 sensing the elevation of the boom through tilting of the fluid motors 10, 11. The switch 19 receives the fluid pressure through a line 39 and acts through a piston-rod 24 to close a microswitch 34 against the action of a compression spring 29 the loading of which is varied by the linkage 40 in accordance with the elevation attitude of the boom. There is thus a differential action in the switch 19 between boom elevation information through the linkage 40 and load information through the pressure in the fluid motors 10, 11. The microswitch 34 when closed operates a warning light and an audio alarm and, through a combined electrical-hydraulic circuit, Fig. 6 (not shown), prevents the operation of any of the controls for the apparatus except in the direction to reduce the overload.
