Abstract

1,152,200. Counterbalancing. CROUZET. 2 Sept., 1966 [20 Sept., 1965], No. 39244/66. Heading B8B. [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] The weight of a machine tool support slide 1 guided along a rail 2 is balanced by a plunger 4 rigidly secured thereto and projecting through the upper end of a cylinder 5 connected by a pipe 7 to an hydraulic reservoir 8 maintained under gas pressure, and the so-balanced slide is displaced vertically by a low power doubleacting pneumatic piston and cylinder device 11 at a speed controlled by a dashpot device comprising a piston 4a secured to the lower end of the plunger 4; the cylinder spaces 5a, 5b on opposite sides being connected by a pipe 12 containing an adjustable valve 14 for regulating flow from space 5b to 5a and containing a check valve 13 in parallel with valve 14 permitting free flow from space 5a to 5b, whilst the pipe 7 connecting reservoir 7 to cylinder 5 contains an adjustable valve 15 for regulating flow from cylinder space 5a to reservoir spaces 8a and a check valve 16 in parallel with valve 15 for permitting free flow from reservoir space 8a to cylinder spaces 5a, 5b. In the event of over-load on slide 1 extra balancing pressure is detained by a screw actuated piston 20 in an auxiliary reservoir 19. In a modification the balancing pressure is derived from an intensifier loaded by compressed air. In a further modification the check valves are incorporated in the piston (4a), Fig. 3 (not shown).
