[Also in Croup XXXIV] An hydraulic power system suitable for actuating the brakes of a motor car comprises a hydro-pneumatic accumulator 2, Fig. 1, adapted to operate over a wide range of pressure, the minimum of which is at least equal to the pressure to be obtained in a utilization circuit having at least one hydraulic receiver 10, a pump 3 started and stopped by automatic regulating means to load the accumulator with a predetermined amount of pressure liquid, and a pressurereducer 12 interposed between the accumulator and the utilization circuit to maintain the pressure in the circuit substantially constant and independent of the output variations of the accumulator. The accumulator is designed so that it will operate over a wide range of pressure, say 150 kg./cms.<SP>2</SP> to 300 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP>, which allows the system to accommodate changes in temperature from - 30‹ to +90‹ C., and has compressed gas in the left-hand chamber V1 and liquid in the other chamber V0 supplied from the tank 1 and pump 3 which is driven by an electric motor 4 controlled by a pressure-responsive device 6 actuating contacts 7 ; the wide range of pressure is stated to permit the use of a comparatively small volume accumulator and tank. The pressure-reducer 12 is interposed between the accumulator 2 and a distributer 11 controlling the supply to a cylinder 10 in the utilization circuit. In another arrangement, the motor 4 is controlled by a switch 31, Fig. 4, actuated by a cam 16 on the rod 13 of the piston when the volume of liquid in the chamber V0 of the accumulator 2a falls to a predetermined value. If the volume falls to a critical value, an acoustic or visual indicator 42 is operated by the cam actuating a switch 43. The system shown in Fig. 4 may be applied to a motor car braking system in which a circuit 49 leading to the rear brakes is supplied by a distributer 52 from the accumulator 2a, pressure-reducer 12, a non- return valve 47 and an auxiliary accumulator 45, and a circuit 50 leading to the front brakes is similarly supplied. A further circuit 54 for aiding a steering-gear or for controlling a folding hood, windows, or the like, may be supplied through a distributer 41. The accumulator 2a, Fig. 3, comprises a body portion 27 in screw-threaded engagement with a head portion 28, a lip 29 ensuring tightness between the two parts. The rod 13 of the piston 5 passes through a packing ring 23 pressed against the head by a spring 24 engaging an abutment 26 secured between the body and head parts. The chamber V1 is sealed from the chamber V0 by a packing-ring 30 spring- pressed against the piston 5. Specification 735,660 is referred to.
