Abstract

581,417. Vehicle &c. suspension devices. S.S. CARS, Ltd., and HEYNES, W. M. March 25, 1944, No. 5567. [Class 108 (iii)] A telescopic suspensior device particularly for vehicle and aircraft wheels comprises flexible envelope means 32 containing gas at super-atmospheric pressure housed within a pressure chamber 31 which is coaxial with and separated by a wall 13 from a liquid chamber 10, restricted one. way communication normally closed by resilient means being provided between the chambers for flow of liquid in each direction through the wall and being opened when the pressure in one chamber is greater than that in the other, flow of liquid from chamber 10 to chamber 31 on shortening of the device being resisted by compression of the envelope means 32, while, on reduction of load, the envelope means expands to force liquid from chamber 31 to chamber 10. As shown, the envelope means 32 comprises a flexible bag secured by an adapter 34 to the upper end of a hollow plunger 12 containing the chamber 31, the remainder of the plunger and the cylinder 14 being filled with liquid. The adapter communicates through a passage 36 with a non- return valve 37 to which a pump may be connected to increase the pressure in the bag 32. On compression of the device, liquid is forced from the chamber 10 through a passage 21 in the plunger-head 13 and moves a spring-pressed slide valve 23 to uncover an opening 22 through which the liquid flows into the chamber 31, compressing the bag 32. On reduction of the load, expansion of the bag 32 forces the liquid from the chamber 31 through a passage 24 so that it moves a second spring-pressed slide valve 26 to uncover an opening 25, through which the liquid flows into the chamber 10. To quicken the return of the device to its normal length, the opening 25 may be of larger diameter than the passage 21. Peripheral notches 29 permit free flow of liquid between the annular space 28 and the chamber 10. The bag 32 may be replaced by a flexible metal bellows or the gas may be enclosed in spherical coverings or balls freely movable within the chamber 31.
