Abstract

941,776. Hot-water supply systems. T. R. CARRUTHERS. Nov. 25, 1959 [Aug. 26, 1958], No. 27301/58. Heading F4A. Water from a non- ferrous hot-water storage tank flows from a pipe 10, around tubes 6 bearing fins 7 in a heat exchanger casing 1 or in the tank, to be heated by water, from a ferrous boiler, flowing through the tubes 6, before passing back to the tank through an upper pipe 11. Water from the boiler passes from a pipe 3 into the tubes 6, via a shroud 12, to a pipe 5, back to the boiler, beyond a tube plate 17. A pocket of air around the shroud above the pipe 11 prevents water from flowing over the shroud to the storage tank water outside it, but if steam is evolved from the boiler water it flows through the pocket to the pipe 11 while any excess water flows into a central expansion tube 13 through orifices 15 in a sleeve 14 (which may be a filter) around the upper part of the tube 13 and through an orifice 16 in the tube to mix with the storage tank water at the bottom of the heat exchanger. On cooling, a small amount of tank water is drawn up the tube 13 to mix with the boiler water. The Provisional Specification describes a heat exchanger in which water from a storage tank flows through the finned tubes and the water from the boiler flows around the tubes. Specification 941,180 is referred to.
