Abstract

1,195,195. Return-tube steam or water boilers. H. F. CROSS, [trading as ENERGY EQUIPMENT CO.], and F. F. MATHEWS. 28 June, 1967 [29 June, 1966], No. 29095/66. Heading F4A. In a double return tube shell-type steam or water boiler, with the flue gases from a furnace tube normally flowing through a first set of return tubes 12 to a smoke box 15a and then through a second set of tubes 14 to an outlet chamber 5, a large diameter tube 1 interconnecting the smoke box at the end of combustion chamber 18 and the smoke box 15a can be opened to by-pass the tubes 12. The by-pass 1 is controlled by a damper 6 which is under the control of a thermostat 8 responsive to the temperature in the outlet flue 5, the damper 6 opening when the flue temperature drops below a predetermined value. If the outlet flue temperature drops still further a thermostat 9 opens a damper 7 in a second by-pass 4 bypassing both sets of tubes 12, 14, to supply hot gases direct from the smoke box at the end of combustion chamber 18 to the outlet 5. An external pipe 15 may connect the smoke box 15a to the outlet chamber 5.
