Abstract
940,500. Constructing underground buildings. N. E. M. BRYDON. Feb. 20, 1961 [Dec. 2, 1959], No. 40954/59 Heading E1A. In the construction of a multi-storey underground garage &c, sheet piling 1 is driven into the ground to enclose the site and columns 2 which serve to support the floors are driven within the area of the site. A concrete roof slab 4 is cast at floor level with a central opening 3 through which earth from the space of the top storey is withdrawn. The floor of the top storey is then cast at level D and the operation repeated for successive lower floors. The columns 2 may be solid steel embedded in concrete at the lower end or may comprise two co-axial tubes, Fig 7 (not shown), of which the outer one extends to the lowest floor while the outer one extends below it and is filled with concrete.
