509,601. Air-raid shelters ; garages. HUGHES, H. I. Dec. 17, 1937, No. 35021. [Classes 20 (i) and 20 (ii)] [Also in Group XXI] An underground building for use as a garage and bomb-proof shelter, for example, is provided with floors supported by a central pillar e and a safety girder j extending to the walls, the building being constructed above ground and sunk progressively as the building proceeds by excavating the earth from the interior. A steel ring of the requisite diameter is first constructed and a concrete cutting edge g is cast around the ring. The exterior wall a is then cast in sections on the cutting ring, together with the central pillar, safety girder, and floors. The structure is supported by sand or hydraulic jacks inserted under a ledge h cast on the inner portion of the shell a, until a sufficient number of storeys have been constructed, when the supports are removed and the earth excavated from the interior to cause the structure to sink under its own weight. The processes of building and excavating are repeated until the required number of storeys have been constructed, and the structure is then underpinned at n, k. The floors are connected by ramps d, openings being left for the accommodation of ventilating and lift shafts f, c. These passages also serve for the removal of the excavated material. Openings are formed in the girder as required to allow access between the two sides of the building. The building may be rendered bomb-proof by providing layers of earth and concrete o at the top of the structure, the uppermost storey being provided with reinforcedconcrete supporting girders p. Decontamination chambers, first-aid stations &c., may be provided in the upper storeys, access thereto being obtained through tunnels leading from ground level.
