916,815. Valves. COMPAGNIE DES FREINS ET SIGNAUX WESTINGHOUSE. Dec. 6, 1960 [Dec. 9, 1959], No. 41940/60. Class 135. A valve comprises a closure member 5 coacting with a seat 4 between the inlet 2 and outlet 3, a screw-threaded stem 6 coacting with an internally-threaded sleeve 7 which is screwed into the housing 1, a sealing ring 12 carried in an annular groove 11 in the stem and coacting with a smooth portion of the sleeve 7, and a handle 15 which is freely rotatable in a collar 14 screwed to the outside of the sleeve 7 and has a square recess engaging a similarly shaped end of the stem 6, the arrangement being such that after removal of the collar 14 and handle 15 the stem can be screwed outwardly beyond the normal fully-open position of the valve to enable the sealing ring 12 to be removed and replaced. During this operation sealing is effected by engagement of the upper surface of the valve member with the inner end of the sleeve 7. A screw 18, adjustable in the end of the stem, constitutes a stop limiting the normal opening movement of the valve. The closure member has two frustoconical portions 27, 29 interconnected by a cylindrical part 28. The seat is sharp-edged at 24, and below a cylindrical part 25 a recess 26 is formed to prevent distortion of the seat by a conduit screwed into the outlet 3. In a modification, the inlet and outlet are in axial alignment and the stop screw 18 is omitted, whilst in a further modification, the handle 15 and collar 14 are omitted and the stem, which terminates just above the sealing ring 12, has a screw-driver slot, and a cap is screwed over the sleeve 7 to enclose the end of the stem.
