A regulating valve comprises a lift-type closure member 31 co-operating with an annular seat 32 in a valve housing 11 and carried by a screwed valve stem 16 the opening movement of which is limited by an externally threaded sleeve 20 adjustably mounted in a cover 11a which completes the valve housing and retained in its adjusted position by a gland 22. The inner end of the cover 11a is screwed into the housing 11 and is provided internally with an acme form of thread 14 to co-operate with a similar thread 15 on the valve stem. The shoulder formed by the end of the latter thread co-operates with an abutment 35 on the sleeve 20. The gland 22 has an hexagonal head below which is a threaded part which engages a thread 21 in the cover 11a and has axial slots 25 to permit radial deformation when the gland forces compressible packing 23 backed by a metal or other hard ring 20 radially inwards against the sleeve 20. The end of the gland 22 is chamfered at about 45 degrees to facilitate this action. The valve stem 16 may similarly be held fixed in the sleeve 20 by a gland 28 and packing 29. The stem 16 is operated by a hand wheel 34 or the like and the sleeve 30, which has flats 30 to facilitate its adjustment, is provided externally with a scale or other suitable markings to indicate its position relative to the gland 22.
