Abstract

<PICT:0900170/III/1> The internal surface of a tubular cathode is coated with refractory insulating material by blowing a vapour suspension of this material through the interior of the cathode and heating to stove the coating. The coating material may be alumina or magnesium oxide with a binder, e.g. ethyl silicate, suspended in a liquid vapour, e.g. methylated spirits and/or acetone. As shown, the cathode 1 is supported, in a block 2 by use of permanent magnet 3, between a spray gun 4 and an exhaust tube 7 up which a jet of air is blown from air line 8. In the spray gun, Fig. 2 (not shown), air from pipe 5 is fed through an annular duct surrounding a pipe 6 up which coating material is sucked to be entrained by the air flow in the region of nozzle 11.
