Abstract

888,953. Electrostatic precipitation. METALLGESELLSCHAFT A.G. Oct. 21, 1960 [Dec. 19, 1959], No. 36250/60. Class 39(1) [Also in Group XI] An electrostatic precipitator has an electrode supported by an insulator 1 formed as a hollow body such as a hollow cylinder, truncated cone (as shown) or pyramid covered at the top by a perforated plate 16, the insulator 1 is located outside the gas chamber of the precipitator above an opening shielded from dust by a cylindrical bushing 4 and wherein the insulator 1 is enclosed within a detachable bell which is secured in a gas tight manner both the interior and the exterior of the insulator 1 being exposed to the gas of the precipitator. The insulator is of quartz, porcelain or steatite and is secured to a flanged ring 2 by brackets or by a ring 13. Ring 2 is carried from the casing wall by heat insulating ring 17. Bell 6 has a metal part 7 lagged with heat insulating material 8 provided with a heating coil 9, and is secured to flanged ring 2 in a gas tight manner. Plate 16 has apertures 15 for gas and rod electrode lead 14. Heating coil 9 heats the insulator 1 to above the dew point of the gas so preventing condensation. Explosive or toxic gases are removed from inside the bell by compressed air after the precipitator has been shut down or to check whether air in the precipitator has been completely replaced by gas by a venting valved pipe 11. There are three electrostatic fields in the precipitators which may use air or gas. A prior art arrangement in which the insulator is a double truncated cone of which half projects into the gas filled interior of the precipitator and the other half is outside the casing and in which the insulator is heated by steam hot gases or electricity (by heating coils) is referred to.
