Abstract
855,111. Cold cathode tubes; ionization chambers. CERBERUS G.m.b.H. March 17, 1959, No. 9193/59. Class 39(1). In a device for determining changes in the composition of a gas, e.g. a fire alarm operating on the changed aerosol content of air due to combustion as described in Specification 854,594, in which the electric centre point of a series connection between two ionization chambers, one closed and the other open and each containing radioactive material, is connected to the control electrode of a relay tube, a reliable connection is obtained by connecting the control electrode and an electrode of each of the ionization chambers to a metallic disc closing one end of the relay tube envelope. In the embodiment shown the glass envelope 15 of a relay tube 14 comprising a cathode 17, anode 18 and control electrode 20 is secured by a layer of putty 16 to a metal cup 12 attached to the base 10 of the device, and is closed at one end by a metal disc 19. A plate 23, forming with a housing 28 carrying radioactive material 40 the outer electrode of an ionization chamber 24, is secured by rivets 25 to the disc 19. The inner electrode 32 is supported by pins 30 (one shown) embedded in the base 10. A pin 26 secured to the plate 23 has a threaded portion 27 carrying a pin 34 forming the inner electrode of an ionization chamber 35 the outer electrode of which is formed by a perforated portion of a jacket 36 attached to the base 10. Radioactive material 38 is provided on a shoulder 42 of a wall 41 of the chamber 35. The disc 19 may alternatively be designed as part of the chamber 24 to dispense with the riveted connection 25. In a further alternative embodiment, Fig. 3 (not shown) the aperture in the wall 41 surrounding the electrode 34 is sealed by an insulating disc of water-repellent material, and the jacket 36 is made in two detachable parts.
