Abstract

914,914. Forming glass fibres. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Jan. 27, 1961 [Sept. 19, 1960], No. 3292/61. Addition to 895,540. Class 56. In apparatus as broadly claimed in the parent Specification, the deflector disposed within the centrifuge across the stream of fibre-forming material is hollow and has its upper wall formed of porous material, means being provided to feed, to the interior of the deflector, a gaseous coolant which escapes through the porous metal to form a gaseous film over the surface to cushion the supply stream. The described embodiment is similar to that of the parent Specification, the supply stream 12 being deflected at 59a by air blown over the surface of the deflector 38a from a slot 53a in an arcuate tube 50a fed from a pipe 52a. The porous upper surface of the deflector 38a is formed of compressed granular metal. The interior of the deflector is fed with air, which escapes through the porous metal, from a pipe 64 which replaces the two pipes which provide a circulation of coolant in the parent Specification. Initial heating of the interior of the centrifuge is provided by burning gas at holes 63 in a pipe 62 instead of burning a gas-air mixture at the slot 53a as in the previous embodiment.
