895,540. Forming glass fibres. OWENS-CORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. June 27, 1960 [Nov. 20, 1959], No. 22473/60. Class 56. Centrifugal fibre forming apparatus comprises a hollow centrifuge rotatable at the lower end of a hollow vertical quill through which a stream of fibre forming material is fed, means within the centrifuge, for distributing the material, comprising a deflector plate disposed across the path of the stream and supported by means extending downwards through the quill and means for directing a blast of gas across the path near the surface of the deflector plate. In the form shown the centrifuge 33 is rotated by a quill 13 and together with the emergent streams 24, is heated by flames from a flame ring 38 fed with an air-gas mixture from a chamber 36, the flames being confined by annular guides 39, 40. The streams are alternated downwardly by a blast from an annular orifice 23. Passing through the quill and surrounding the glass stream 12 are a tube 49 and an inner, eccentric tube 48, the space between which is closed at top and bottom by plates 50, 51. This space is fed with coolant through pipes, one of which, 52, reaches near the bottom while the other, not shown, ends near the top. Passing through the space are a pipe 46 and another not shown, parallel to it, which feed coolant to a hollow box 42 which forms the deflector in the path of the glass stream. A blast is produced across the surface of the box from a slit 57 in a pipe 54 which is in the shape of an arc about the axis of the glass stream and is fed from a pipe 55. This pipe may be fed with air/gas mixture which is burnt to heat the inside of the centrifuge during starting, whereafter air only may be used to deflect the glass stream as at 63.
