Abstract

546,531. Active carbon. HELLER, O. Jan. 6, 1941, No. 188. [Class 90] In a process and apparatus for the production of active carbon the activating gases are blown down on to a layer of carbonaceous material while at the same time air or oxygen is blown in a direction parallel or nearly parallel to the layer and burn with the reaction gases developed in the process. The tubes &c. through which the activating gases are introduced are preferably moved relatively to the carbonaceous material. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 a number of tubes 1, 3 are mounted on a rotating shaft 16 and are connected respectively to the interior of the shaft 16 for the supply of air and to an inner tube 17 for the supply of activating steam or gas. In this arrangement protecting tubes 20 enclose the tubes 1, 3, but in other constructions such as shown in Fig. 1 they are omitted. Ploughs 5 are attached to the tubes to agitate the material 7. The activating gases are projected down on to the material through jets 4, and the air in a horizontal direction through jets 2. Specification 446,505 is referred to.
