880,294. Gripping devices for handling articles. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Nov. 20, 1959 [Nov. 22, 1958], No. 37673/58. Class 78(4). [Also in Group XL (a)] A grab for removing extraneous objects from channels in the core of a nuclear reactor comprises an annular body part 1 having an annular groove 2 forming a track for a member 9 guided by roller races 11 and sliding on pads 12. Eight resilient fingers 4 are secured to the part 1 and have eyelets 8 on their free ends through which passes a looped cable 7, the cable ends extending through a hole 3 in the part 1 and being connected by nipples 10 to the member 9. The grab is operated by an electric motor (not shown) driving a shaft 30 and includes a television camera 14 as disclosed in Specification 866,301, the motor and camera being mounted in a body 15 secured by a sleeve 18 to the part 1. A sleeve 22 rotatable on bearings 25, 26 within the sleeve 18 has an internal gear 31 driven by a gear 29 on the shaft 30 and carries a screwed pin 32. In operation the motor is energized to drive the sleeve 22 clockwise so that the pin 32 moves into engagement with a recess 34 formed in a lug 35 on the member 9 whereby the latter moves in the groove 2 and draws up the ends of the cable 7 and the ends of the fingers 4 are flexed inwardly to engage the object. On reversal of the motor the fingers return under their own resilience to the normal position. In a modification (not shown) the fingers are rigid and pivoted and biased by springs.
