[Also in Division G6] A device for .handling nuclear fuel elements 4 in a swimming pool reactor 1 and enabling them to be transferred from a box 2 to a box 2a and be inverted in the process comprises a tubular support 6 having a hand wheel 8 and supported by a float 72, the lower end of the support rotatably receiving a shaft 12 to which one jaw 16 of a gripper is fixed. The jaw 16 has a bore 18 aligned with a sleeve 20 fixed to it and pivotably supports at 26 a second jaw 16 controlled by a cable 34 connected through a link 36 to a handle 38. A sleeve 40 slidable within the support 6 has an abutment 42 engaged by a spring 44, the other end of the spring engaging a shoulder 46 on the link 36. The spring 44 tends to move the handle 38 downwards but this is normally prevented by locking ball 56 supported in an aperture in the sleeve 40 and engaging a recess in the handle. The ball 56 is controlled by a spring-biased finger 50 having a groove 54 receiving the ball. In order to pick up a fuel element 4 the device is positioned thereover by the hand wheel 8 and is depressed by the hand wheel so that the fuel element is received in the bore 18; also the finger 50 is depressed causing the ball 56 to further enter the groove 54 and release the handle 38, whereupon the latter moves downwards and a spring-biased plunger 32 closes the jaw 24, a jaw finger 28 entering a slot 22 in the sleeve 20 to engage the fuel element. In order to invert the fuel element the shaft 12 is connected to a pinion 60 engaged by a toothed rack 58 fixed to the lower end of the sleeve 40, the upper end of the sleeve having a further toothed rack 62 engaged by a pinion 64 operated by a handle 66 whereby the sleeve may be slid within the support 6 and the jaws 16, 24 rotated through 180 degrees. A modified gripper for handling horizontally disposed objects is described with reference to Fig. 2 (not shown).
