Abstract

1,027,066. Article engaging devices. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. April 26, 1963 [April 27, 1962], No. 16506/63. Heading B8H. The jaws 6, Fig. 1, of an article-engaging device are moved outwards to engage a load 9 by a cam 23 rotated by a unidirectional ratchetwheel 21 and pawls 22, Fig. 4, which is driven by a counterweight 13, Fig. 1, to which a lifting device is attached by a rod 17. As it is lowered the lifting device is guided on to the load 9 by a bell-shaped member 8. The counterweight 13 continues to descend after the rest of the device has come to rest and in so doing rotates the ratchet wheel 21 by means of a pin 18 which moves in a helical slot 11a in a sleeve 11 to which the ratchet wheel is attached. This rotation drives the cam 23 anticlockwise in Fig. 4 and moves the jaws 6 into engagement with the load against the resistance of springs 24. As the device is raised the counterweight moves upwards until it abuts a plate 2, Fig. 1, and in so doing rotates the sleeve 11 and the ratchet wheel 21 clockwise as seen in Fig. 4. This rotation does not turn the cam 23 and so the jaws remain in engagement with the load which is raised. When the load is set down a second counterclockwise rotation occurs which this time turns the cam 23 to allow the jaws to disengage from the load. The amount by which the cam 23 turns can be adjusted by providing washers 25, Fig. 1, of various thicknesses.
