In a control system for the lifting winch 5, Fig. 1, of an automatic gripper 1 adapted to be engaged or disengaged from articles 32 after repeated reciprocations of the lifting cable 3, switches are provided for stopping the winch 5 at the engaging or disengaging positions and for starting cyclical movements of the cable which continue until the article is engaged or released, whereupon the winch is automatically restarted. In the particular example the cable 3 passes over a pulley 22 capable of vertical reciprocation in guide ways 27 by a crank mechanism 24, 25 driven from an electric motor 26 and normally retained in the uppermost position. The cable 3 also passes over a pulley 13 mounted on a double pivoted crank 40, 42, Fig. 2, yieldingly held by springs 17a, 18a and adapted to operate switches L, M which stop the winch when the tension is either released or reaches a predetermined maximum. Further switches N, O, P at the loading or unloading positions operate through control 28 to stop or start the motor 26 causing cyclical movement when the load is to be either withdrawn or deposited. The arrangement permits the load to make a limited number of inadvertent engagements with obstructions without being released. The gripper comprises a cylindrical casing 100, Fig. 3, carrying pivoted claws 106 operated by a vertically reciprocal cam 144 in engagement with rollers 137, 138. The cam 144 is actuated through a lost-motion collar 42 by a rod 102 attached to the lifting cable 3 carrying a weighted cam member 110 having stepped grooves 118 engaged by a pin 120 on the cylindrical casing 100. The weight 110 is free to reciprocate vertically when the load in the cable 3 is applied and released and the pin 120 and groove 78 arrangement causing the weight 110 to rotate stepwise. In one group of four rotatable positions of the weight 110, teeth prevent the weight 110 and rod 102 from being raised sufficiently to release the claws 106 so that the load is retained. In another group of four rotatable positions of the weight 110, the teeth 122 do not engage the weight 110 so that the weight 110 and rod 102 are raised sufficiently for a collar 142 on the rod 102 to engage and raise the cam 144 to release the claws 106.
