[Also in Divisions F2 and G3] In a winch device for raising and lowering a weight 1, Fig. 1, such as the control rod of a nuclear reactor, in which the drive may be disconnected to allow the weight 1 to fall freely, the winch drum 2 is coupled to an inertia device for which the moment of inertia is increased towards the end of the fall to decelerate the motion. In the example in which the drum 2 is driven for raising the weight by an electric motor 7 through shafts 6, 4 coupled by a freewheel clutch 9, inertia weights 18 are attached to pivoted radial arms 17 on the shaft 6 which are forced radially outwardly towards the end of the fall. The shaft 4 is threaded at 4a and carries a nut 10 which is keyed at 10a against rotation and moves axially between fixed end stops 11 operating at the fully raised position and spring-loaded end stops 12 operating at the fully lowered position. Cam plates 20 engaging pins 19 on the inertia arms 17 are coupled to the nut 10 through a bearing sleeve 15 and carry arcuate slots 20 adapted to hold the inertia arms 17 radially inwards during a considerable part of the fall and to force them suddenly outwards at the end of the fall. The nut 10 moves a slider 13a across a potentiometer wire 13 coupled to a motor M for sensing the position of the weight.
