Abstract

1,268,304. Spring drums; slings. HEBEZEUGWERK SUHL VEB. 23 Feb., 1970, No. 8570/70. Headings B8B and B8H. A load engaging and holding device suspended by bars 12 from a load lifting apparatus, comprises arms 2 for gripping the sides of a load 3 and claws 11 for engaging each end of the load 3, the claws each being attached to a cable 10 extending from a pre-tensioned spring drum 4 which is automatically rotationally locked when the device is lifted. Each drum 4 is pretensioned by winding up a coil spring coupled between the drum and its shaft, a pawl and ratchet being provided to prevent tension relief, after which the drum is further tensioned by unwinding the cable 10 to place the claw 11 in position on the load. Movement of the bars 12 due to force executed thereon by the lifting apparatus causes a ratchet on each drum to be engaged by a pawl normally spring biased out of engagement, whereby the drums are locked during lifting.
