1391303 Yarn transfer in continuous winding machines E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 6 July 1972 [16 July 1971] 31770/72 Heading D1J In a winding apparatus of the kind having a drive roll 22 to which a plurality of chucks 18 are advanced in succession by, articulated arms 12, 14, each chuck having snagging elements 78 and carrying a package support 44, there is a yarn transfer mechanism comprising guide means 66, 73 for moving the yarn across the snagging elements 78, a rocker 61 carrying the guide means 66, 73, and a cam 62 on the rocker 61 that is displaced by a cam follower 29 on the arm 12 as the package is swung to its doffing position, this displacement causing the guide means 66. 73 to move the yarn into the snagging elements 78. An arm 14 is supported in a yarn winding position by engagement of a pin 8 on a pawl 34. When the package is complete as determined by a timer 83 or a package size sensor a pneumatic circuit is activated to release a second arm 14' from a catching device 42 which lets package support 44' rest on drive roll 22. After about fifteen seconds a rod 52 is moved to push the yarn 26 into a fixed guide 45 and the pawl 34 releases the lower arm 14 to descend and a roller 29 fixed thereto to enter a cam track between elements 20, 30 and 62, the upper arm 14' then descends to the winding position. The cam element 62 is movable on a rocker 61 so that the roller 29 at the lower end of its travel depresses rocker 61 against a spring loaded damper 64 and through a mechanical linkage moves yarn catching elements 66 and 73 to carry the yarn across the snagging elements of the empty support 44. The yarn now snaps between the bobbins and a hook 82a or moves the yarn to the left to wind a transfer tail. The bar 52 now backs off to allow the yarn to disengage the hook 82a and guide 45 and be picked up by the traverse guide 24. The full package on arm 14, 12 is now at the lower position of Fig 2 supported by a cradle (36) Fig 1 (not shown). The package is doffed manually and the arm lifted to the latch 42. A pneumatic circuit for the operation of the apparatus is shown in Fig 2. In an alternative embodiment Fig 6 (not shown) the guide 45 is movable and the hook 82a is dispensed with.
