Abstract

1380406 Elevator catch gear TIRFOR Ltd 22 Dec 1972 [25 Sept 1971] 44800/71 Heading B8L A failsafe device for hoisting equipment wherein a load 8 is automatically supported by a safety cable 2 if the main cable 10 goes slack, comprises a housing 1 through which the cable 2 extends, jaws within the housing 1 for normally gripping the cable 2 but releasable therefrom by a lever 4, pivotable relative to the housing 1 by an attachment assembly 5 connected to the main cable 10, the assembly 5 being moved relative to the housing 1 against a return spring 9, to release the jaws once the cable 10 is tensioned by the load 8. The load 8 is secured to a housing 7 secured to the housing 1. In the embodiment of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the device is used with a single cable passing through the housing and between the jaws, the load carrying housing being moved up and down the cable by a step-by-step mechanism engaging the cable. In the embodiments of Figs. 5 to 8 (not shown), the operating lever, return springs and attachment assembly are all mounted inside a common housing. Stops are provided on all the embodiments to restrict the jaw releasing movement of the attachment assembly and a manual override is provided to release the jaws to facilitate threading of the cable through the device.
