The object of this invention is to provide a carrier adapted for movement on a cable,
said carrier having a hoisting cable passing therethrough and including special means for locking the hoisting cable when the carrier is moving to a point of discharge and means for locking the carrier to the cable first named upon reaching the point of discharge, and simultaneously releasing the la hoisting cable.
A further object is to provide for effecting these movements in timed relation.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel con- 15 struction and arrangement of elements described, illustrated and claimed it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, forming part of this application,
Figure 1 shows the device in front elevation.
Figure 2 is a view in vertical section, the hoisting cable grip being released and the other cable grip being engaged.
Figure 3 shows the carrier in rear elevation. Figure 4 is a vertical section and shows the construction of Figure 2, but with the hoisting cable grip engaged and the other cable grip released.
Figure 5 shows the operative structure of Figure 3, in elevation, the view being from I the side opposite to that appearing in Figure 3.
Figures 6 and 7 are sections respectively on lines 66 and 7-7 of Figure 5.
Figure 8 is a detail of the spring held arm at the left of Figure 5.
Figure 9, in elevation, shows the same structure as Figure 5, the slide 29 having been shifted by the screw, and disk 33 having been moved counter-clockwise, likewise the cam 34.
Figures 10 and 11 are details in elevation, of the structure at the left of Figures 5 and 9, the disk and cam having been further rotated. The carrier includes a housing 10 having a A front cover plate 12 and the back cover plate 13, the rear side of which is designated 13,
the top of the housing being shown at 14. The lower portion ofthe housing is open at the ends, and conveying cable 15 passes thru these open end portions. This cable engages pulley wheels or sheaves 16 and 17, the lat ter having its axle a mounted in the wide vertical members of the housing.
Hoisting cable 18 passes around a pulley wneel or sheave 19 and thence around pulley 20, the pivot member of which is connected with yoke 21 secured to cable Cable 22 passes under pulley wheel 28 and the yoke of this pulley member is connected with gripping device 25 for handling the load indicated by reference number 26. Cables 18 and are secured at the point shown in Figure 1 and elsewhere.
A gear wheel 17 is keyed on shaft a, and meshes with a pinion 27 having a thread 28 thereon engaging threaded slide 29 operable in guides 29, in either direction, and against the action of springs 29". A bar 30 is pivoted to the slide, at 30, and near the free end of bar 30 is a shoulder 31 contacting with pin 32 on disk having an axle 3 which carries a cam 34 as shown in Figures 2 and Shoulders 33 on disk 33 are engaged by lug Z on arm m, pivoed to bar 30 at m, and acting under the influence of spring 8.
Thru the operation of the engaging devices on disk 38, as controlled by the position of the threaded slide 29, the position of cam 3 1 is controlled in accordance with the position of the carrier on cable 15, causing the devices specified below to grip conveying cable 15 and release hoisting cable 18, simultaneously, or to produce a reverse result, that is, release cable 15 and engage cable 18.
Cam 84 imparts swinging movement to yoke 35 pivoted at 36 and having a tension spring 37 connected therewith and secured at 38. V
- Yoke is connected at 39 with links or the like 39 which in turn are connected with a cable engaging device or cable grip 4O having a cam surface 41 for contact with cable 15, providing gripping action between eleure 4-; the position of Figure 11 pin Z having enment and bar 42, thereby locking the carrier to the conveying cable 15.
Cam 34- carries a pin engaging a lever 46 pivoted at 6L7 and pivotally connected with link 48. This link is pivoted at 49 to cable grip having a cam surface 51 for gripping hoisting cable 18 by forcing the latter into contact with bar 52. A tension spring 53 is connected with cable grip 50 at the point 54., and is secured at 55.
In View of the relative positions of the elements, the cable gripping devices will be operated in reverse relation, that is, when cam 34;- is in the position of Figure 2, grip 40 will engage cable 15 and grip 50 will automatically move to position for releasing hoisting cable 18. On the other hand, when cam tis in the position of Figure 4, .grip 40 will bereleased from cable 15, and grip 50 will engage and lock cable 18. This movement of cam 34% is controlled by the mechanism of Figure 5,.operating as above described. i a
Cable gripseO and 50 are to be operated in reverse relation, because the load 26 is to be released only when the carrier including housing 10 is in a stationary position on cable 15 andis retained by grip Figure 2 shows cable 18 as then being free to release the load, grip 50 being disengaged.
In Figure 5 slide 29, ready to move to the right, will cause pin Zto engage the adjacent shoulder of disk 33, and rotate the latter to the position of Figure 9. Reversal of Slide 29 will cause thrust on pin 32 (by the movement of shoulder 31 to the left), and the disk will be rotated to the position of Figure l0cam 34; and the clamps or grips 40 and 50 then being in the position of Fig- Another reversal of slide 29 brings gaged theadj acent shoulder of disk 33, to effeet the desired counter-clockwise movement. Cable 15 is again gripped,.and cable 18 is released at50, 51, 52, for releasing the load 26.
, What is claimed is I 1. A device of the class described, comprising a carrier housing, sheaves mounted therein foren 'aging a conveying cable, a sheave also mounted in the housing for engaging a hoisting cable, a locking and gripping device tor engaging each cable, and means including worm controlled and slide controlled cam mechanism for releasing one or" said locking devices and moving the other lockingdevice into engagement with the cable with which it is associated, and devices for con trolling said means by the position of the carrier.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a carrier housing, sheaves mounted therein for engaging a conveying cable, a sheave also mounted in the housing for engaging a hoisting cable, a locking and gripping device for engaging each cable, and means for releasing one of said locking devices and moving the other locking device into engagement with the cable with which it is associated, said means last-named including a cam controlled by the movement of the carrier, a forked member controlled by the cam, said forked member having connection with the gripping device of the conveying cable, and a lever controlled by the cam and having connection with the gripping device for the hoisting cable. v
3. A device of the class described, comprising a carrier housing, sheaves mounted therein for engaging a conveying cable, a sheave also mounted in thehousing for engaging a hoisting cable, a locking and gripping device for each cable, and means for releasing one of the locking devices and moving the other locking device into engagement with the cable with which it is associated, said means including an arm, controlled from the axial member of one of the sheaves first named, a notched disk and means thereon cooperating with the arm, acam rotated by the disk, a pivoted spring held arm connected with the arm first namedand including an engaging device also cooperating with the notched. disk, and devices controlled by the cam for operating the cable gripping de vices, in reverse relation. a
