Abstract

883,444. Catch gear for mine cages. ELLIOT & CO. Ltd., GEORGE. May 18, 1960 [May 26 1959], No. 17954/59. Class 78 (3). [Also in Group XXXIV] Hydraulically actuated brake pads (not shown) are automatically applied to the opposite faces of four pulleys 8, around which pass cage guide cables 5, if the hoisting rope 2 slackens or breaks, thus releasing tension in a turn buckle 9 and allowing a compression spring 10 to act on a bell-crank lever 21, 21a which is operatively connected to an hydraulic master cylinder 25. In a modification (not shown), two master cylinders are provided. In a further modification (not shown), the pulleys have ratchet teeth which are engaged by one or more pawls under the action of the spring to bring the cage to rest.
